A fair review of XP

UNIX, XP Add comments

I was looking at my normal site I read from time to time and I noticed this post. I think it’s a pretty fair look at Windows XP from a person who has not used it since Windows95 and is a pretty heavy MacOSX and UNIX user.

If you have Windows XP, why do you use linux?
Basically I dont see any advantages to using linux over windows xp, Im dual booting windows
and ubuntu. Ubuntu is nice and all but I dont see anything that would make me prefer it
over windows. The only thing i have been using ubuntu for is web browsing playing
music/movies (cant play games) which I can do better/hassle free in windows.
So what are the advantages of l using linux over xp?

    Great Question.

I am a Mac user at home. I have an iBook I use for pretty much everything I do at home. I love the iLife apps as they help me manage my photos, I like to shot photgraphy, and I like the simplicty of the OS.

Linux on the other had has it’s pluses too. I think Linux has it’s place only problem is everyone is trying to fit in some box, in fact the same box that Windows fits into and in time we will all learn that it will not fit. Linux is one of those things that can do many things and is good for a lot of thing but not for everything. Windows and Mac are on the same level and with the right skill level Linux can be too.

Linux on the other hand will run pretty much everywhere and can’t do everything thing Windows can do. It’s can play games, but it also can’t run and viruses, trojans or other bad crap.

You can in fact run some games on Linux and it’s only going to get better since most games are coded in C++ and compile better on Linux.

You could use Codeweavers to run pretty much anything you like to run on Widnows on Linux. I am one of the beta testers for CrossOver Office and trust me it works. So you can’t really say, “I can’t run Office on my Linux desktop”, well yes you can now.

Linux is really a choice in the right direction. Microsoft Windows gained a foot hold in the biz world some years back, becuase they were focused on getting in there and made it easier to do what other companies had made a bit harder for the average IT guy. You had to be a real certified and hard core IT geek to work on Novell, Vines, and like me the iSeries (AS/400) and I think Windows for people is good, but there are better ways to run a campany now adays than on Windows.

Sun has Sunrays that are little Linux stations that run Citrix apps and other things without all the bulky hardware of a PC and having to keep up on an OS. The OS lives on the Server not the end users desktop. These types of applications for Linux are where it is going to gain ground.

As for me, I am a Geek. I have my Macs, my Linux Desktops and Server and one Windows XP box for Americas Army, BF2, SimCity and CIV4. Other than that I am not a “Windows User”.

I do have to use it at work for my desktop, but I think I hit the final hurdle today to move off of it onto OpenSUSE Desktop.

    We will see. Great Quetstion.
