COMMON Day 2
icon1 David | icon2 COMMON | icon4 04 30th, 2007| icon3No Comments »

So today was pretty typical I guess. Training all day and a few stops off at a booth or two to talk solutions. It’s too bad IT doe snot have money like they used too.

There are some great solutions out there that every IT shop with an i5. I will write more later. Going to bed now. Later.

All is going well at COMMON. The usual suspects are all here and it’s very interesting to hear them all talk and present. I had the privilege as a new speaker to be in a speakers meeting with all of the current active speakers at COMMON this year. Not everyone was there but it was a good turnout.

There is a raging conversation inside COMMON to stop handing out printed versions of the handouts. I know you are now checking the date on the post to make sure its not 1988….nope in 2007 we are having a discussion about printing material for IT people. While I don’t like the printed handouts and think they are a waste and have thrown away any and all of them to date if I have gotten on in the past. I would rather have the PDF to search on.

Let me also point out that there are some professional cry baby’s in this group who made it known that they were all mad and upset with the notion. On presenter tried to threaten the COMMON organization and then tried to make the point that he could not teach CODE Samples without handouts present. So if that were the case then the System iNetwork site is a huge waste of time with there ON-LINE code snippets. And every web site that gives you CODE snippets is pointless as well since we all know we need to have the printed CODE to be effective. How ridiculous?

The other load and obnoxious long time presenter made it known that you could not learn anything from him unless you had a hand out as well. He made his point by screaming into the microphone in the room as loud as he could like an angry 4 year old would if he were not getting his way. It was all very sad to watch indeed. People you respected where all having fits.

There were the level headed ones in the group who were very well spoken and made some very good points. I am on the side that handouts should be on-line. Print them out if you have a tree to use for paper. It’s a huge waste. I can keep the notes and the presentation on my laptop and with Google Desktop search them anytime I need.

Ubuntu vs Vista

link to Post

Is Linux finally ready to take on Windows as a desktop OS? We tried out both Vista and Ubuntu on individual PCs to see which works better. Here’s who won.

This seems to be one of the most even reviews I have read and will reread it many times to make sure I fully understand it and can consume it.

The last comments seem like the place where the injustice is. At no point does the author seem like either one better. They are still very different OSes.

“Ubuntu’s best strength is handling the ordinary task-based day-to-day stuff. Vista has a level of completeness and polish that some people find it hard to do without. ”

Thanks Switzerland for you super grey outlook and neutral opinion on nothing.  Nice way to not make a point and say what you really feel. I think there were times in the article when you could feel the author start to lean to one side and then at the bottom they call it a tie….oh well. I think we can all read and see who really won. Might I add Vista is expensive and you really don’t own the copy you just purchased and Ubuntu is free and so is the support.

Beginning with the next alpha release of openSUSE 10.3, alpha 4, ZENworks will be gone, according to Jaeger. Instead, openSUSE “will use the native tools only — Zypper, Opensuse-updater, and YAST.”

While Jaeger didn’t explain why Novell and the openSUSE group had made this decision, the messages on the openSUSE list made it clear that the developers were glad to see ZENworks go. A typical comment came from Ted Bullock, an openSUSE developer, who said, “This is very good news. I have never felt comfortable with the overall reliability and integration of ZENworks in openSUSE. I’m glad to see the last of it.”

Well if you asked me I would say yes….is the Data Center and IT ready for the Mac and that would be no. Most IT managers don’t have a clue? Not all of them just some. I know my Mac I am typing on right now was cheaper than the DELL they just got me at work and the OS is 1000 times better. Oh and my Mac is faster than my DELL. I could go on for days how the DELL laptops are such a waste of money and much more expensive than your average Mac today?

Not that he wanted any new fans? I did a Google for “Chris Hird Fan Club”+ iSeries, and got back nothing. Google must be broken?

link to the Article Chris Hird wrote for System iNetwork

While Chris and I have been on the AS/400 the same amount of time, it appears that Chris has spent his time a little better, in that he has created a few applications, which I would love to do and am learning now in college, but have not done yet. While I truly agree with Chris and know that in order for the System i5 to survive it needs to innovate and do the same things that the other platforms out there are doing. It needs to be proficient in Java and C. For the record the i5 has been doing C and Java for some time and if you want great Java support the i5 is the only way to go. 64 Bit Java is much faster then anything Sun offers.

I have long struggled with the idea that it has a language that is not native to other platforms. Although it’s not something I can speak to, but I understand the ramifications of the RPG language. I would have to add that FREE/RPG is a step in the right direction, but would it not just make sense to just dump RPG for a better tool like C/Java/PHP?

I have been getting a little more action latley with my comments about the new 515 system IBM put out a few weeks back. With COMMON right around the corner I am sure IBM is not going to be very happy to see me in person. I want to make it known I am not going to let this issue go away. I plan to ask everyone with an IBM affiliation the following questions:

1. Why does IBM contenue to cripple the i5 with interactive taxes and user limits?

2. When will they port the entire Client Access package to Linux and MacOSX?

3. When will they stop pandering to the Linux community and actually start supporting it with actions rather than words.

4. Will they support the Ubuntu Project and help make it run on Power5(6)? I want FREE Linux on the i5 not what they offer now.

5. Open Source i5OS? ( you didn’t think I was going to say that but I did.)

I know I am a mad man about this but IBM needs to think and “lead” technology like they have with the PowerPC chips. That kind of innovation needs to be the life blood of IBM not just one small piece.

I love history! We don’t look at recent history enough so I was looking around the web and found these old pictures of some old keypunch machines. It really is neat to see the older systems and how large they were.

Here is a new list of complaints form users

IBM in all it’s wisdom has put the cap of 40 users on the 515. I have mentioned this before. Why? We may never know. It just seems like another stupid move by IBM. They seem to make these from time to time and it is dumbfounding. Like the move to keep what will go down as the ugliest mail client, Lotus Notes, around for so long before working on a decent replacement. Why they would announce to the world they were going to move all global desktops and laptops to Linux in the next five years and then do nothing with their Windows Software to foster that move.

Why would you make the fastest, and most reliable system, the i5 in a nice small affordable package and then put a limit on it? Why? Please someone with brains take over the i5 business unit at IBM and do something right for a change? In the last 20 years IBM has bumbled the i5 product line like a bunch of keystone cops. They get something right like the price and the size and then do something stupid like put a cap on the number of users.

You want to sell more i5 units than you ever have before? Put someone like me in charge of the i5 unit and give me 5 years, I would put sales through the roof and it would all be because I would take the likes of DELL and Microsoft on head to head. I would give them night mares and make them scramble to keep up with me. The issue is that IBM has followed the market instead of leading it. The i5 is a super system and they still hid it in a corner and put Lenovo laptops on the homepage. Those laptops are not going to save IBM from floundering. You have to innovate and lead the charge and the i5 can do that but you don’t lead with a 40 user cap…..you get beat up and batted down for being stupid and short sighted.

You don’t have to be brilliant to sell the i5 you have to out smart the competition and you have to sell it’s strong points. I know how I would do it and I am not fancy college grad with a Phd or a Masters but I do know CIOs and CEOs and I know what the Microsoft morons are doing and I know you just shot yourself in the foot again?

The i5 team at IBM seems inept again. They don’t seem to understand that IT shops are getting less and less money not more. They are wondering if IBM is still the right choice and SUN who just open sourced Solaris and will do anything to get a sale is going to eat this 40 user cap up for lunch. Did no one in the room when you were working out this 40 user plan call any of you stupid? Did no one complain out loud, there had to be one person in the room who said I don’t think that’s such a good idea…give that person a promotion and the rest of you get to go home for being stupid! They should be in charge not the moron at IBM who thought the cap was a good idea?

I am sure they will find someway at COMMON to avoid this topic as I am going to bring it up as much as I can? IBM has made a move that I think will go down as one of the death nails of the i5 instead of one of those moments when it made a positive impact unless they fix it in the next 15 days or so to save face and make things right.

Oh did I also mention I would get rid of the interactive cap as well? Just to make up for all those years or taxing us for interactive users.

“Well there are some places now, where Ubuntu is a better option than Windows. It’s not everywhere - not by any means - but there are some places. So for example we get a lot of reports now of developers who install computers for their parents and they put Ubuntu on them, because it’s not gonna get spyware, it’s not gonna get viruses, it’s very easy to maintain remotely and keep up-to-date. And so they are not getting constantly called by their parents saying their computer won’t work or “my ISP tells me that I got viruses on my computer”. It does everything they need, it does web and e-mail, office and spreadsheets and things like that. So in those cases Ubuntu is a very good option for everyday users. It’s also good in call centers or office environments, where everybody is just using web-based applications. As an example, Lufthansa has all of there pilots use Ubuntu on their Laptops, cause they are constantly in different hotels using the WIFI-system and they don’t want to get spyware and viruses. So there are lots of places where Ubuntu is relevant for ordinary users.

But not everywhere, I absolutely would agree to that. But it’s certainly good enough for me and I’m a pretty demanding user.”

Link to Post here about the 515 and 525 Systems

We’ve received a range of feedback about IBM’s recent 515 and 525 entry-level System i announcements. Many of the comments have been quick and to the point, both positive and negative, including the shortest response so far, which was simply “Still too expensive.” Other readers have vacillated from elation to dismay. . . . Clearly there are a few areas we’ll want to follow up on, including what these announcements might mean for existing customers. Look for more tomorrow. In meantime, here’s a first shot of feedback:

Why Ubuntu over Vista?
icon1 David | icon2 Ubuntu | icon4 04 16th, 2007| icon3No Comments »

I know I took this right from Ubuntu but hey what can I say?

Latest Ubuntu delivers on the promise of Open Source

While millions consider whether to pay for Vista, the Ubuntu project releases its secure, high performance, free desktop and server editions.

LONDON, April 16, 2007 – For users wanting a secure, feature rich alternative to Microsoft Windows, Canonical Ltd., the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, announced today the Thursday release of Ubuntu version 7.04.
Ubuntu is the award-winning Linux distribution for the desktop, laptop, thin client and server which brings together the best of open source software every 6 months. Ubuntu 7.04 desktop edition includes a ground-breaking Windows migration assistant, excellent wireless networking support and improved multimedia support.
Ubuntu 7.04 server edition adds support for hardware facilities that speed up the use of virtual machines as well as other improved hardware support, making it an excellent choice as a web, database, file and print server, the fastest growing area of Linux server use. Ubuntu’s already outstanding support for thin clients is boosted with advanced print and sound support.
“In the coming months, many individuals and businesses will be making the decision to upgrade their existing computer systems and their operating systems,” said Jane Silber, director of Operations, Canonical Ltd. “With added features to both the desktop and server editions, Ubuntu 7.04 is the most user-friendly version to date and is ideally suited to anyone who wants to make the switch to Linux and join the community of Ubuntu users. In fact, with this version of Ubuntu, it is easier than ever to move away from proprietary platforms.”
At the same time as Ubuntu, the project also will release new versions of Kubuntu and Edubuntu, specialized versions of Ubuntu which include the KDE desktop environment and educational applications, respectively.
Ubuntu Fully Supported

Used by businesses, home users, schools and governments around the world, upgrades to new releases will always be free of charge. Ubuntu 7.04 will be maintained for 18 months on both the desktop and on the server, and additional free support is available from the thriving Ubuntu community. For deployments which require additional service guarantees, full telephone and online support is commercially available globally from the professional support team at Canonical Ltd and service partners.

I am a big fan of Ubuntu- Yada yada, and I found this app called OpenBravo and while I am still getting my head around it I think it’s pretty robust for a free solution. I have always likes SugarCRM but this takes it to a whole new level. I am going to play around with the Virtual VMWare and Xen (LINK 2 )Servers they have set up and see where I can use this in every day kind of way.

I want to include more about this in my presentation @ COMMON.
