Shame on AT&T for forcing people to buy things they didn’t want. I called each of the stored listed in the post and they all refused to comment. I did however finally get someone on the phone at the Seattle store that admitted to the accusations and said they were not doing it anymore. Then I asked him how many iPhones they had in stock right now and he said “none” to that I said, then of course your not selling accessories with the iPhone anymore since you have no iPhones to sell. It all makes sense. Apple will of course take care of this. I hate it when you go to buy a new gaming system and are forced to buy a bundle, of which I will not. This is the same kind of crap! Nice job AT&T.

The two worlds of Apple vs. AT&T

Last night, at the last minute, I succumbed to iPhone lust as I passed a line in front of an AT&T store on Broadway in the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

I found this on CNN.com and thought it was a great idea! You install some software on your Mac and if someone steals it you get a bunch of info about the IP, Location, and a picture via iSight of who stole it. That is some good stuff!

Hundreds of people who lined up to be among the first to get their hands on Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s coveted iPhone are now the braggarts and guinea pigs for the latest must-have, cutting-edge piece of techno-wizardry. The doors of Apple and AT&T stores opened promptly at 6 p.m. EDT with cheers from employees and eager customers.

“I’m glad it’s over,” said Carlos Sanchez, 19, at the Apple Fifth Avenue store in New York City, clutching shopping bags containing two iPhones - the maximum allowed per person. “I don’t have to sleep outside anymore.”

Techies, exhibitionists and luminaries - even the co-founder of Apple and the mayor of Philadelphia - were among the inaugural group of iPhone customers.

So I just got an SMS message from my brother Michael. He is in line in Chattanooga, TN at the mall waiting for his iPhone. He said he is number 18 at the Cingular store. I think AT&T should use the Cingular name rather than AT&T. The old name sounds old. I would rather have Cingualr service than AT&T service. He is going on and on about some ride in a Porsche 911 the other day. I would have to admit it is one of my dream cars and I will own one in the next 5 years I promise you that. I would like to have the 930 but….oh let me get back to it.

He says there is a display in the store with the iPhone on it. Says that almost brought them out and decided not to. Now they are giving them a brief about how to activate the iPhone.

The guy also says that at the Cingular Stores you can buy one and ship the second one. So the Apple stores get 2 per person and at Cingular stores you get one and order a second one. The guy still does not know how many they have in stock? Odd

First guy in line there sold his stop for $300 to some other guy. Michael is sweaty and hot there, they are on the sidewalk and the only cool air is coming from Babies-r-us next door. The sun is moving over head and he is not as hot as before. They have 5 minutes to wait and things are starting to get crazy there. I bet this is fun for everyone. Wish I had a need one.

It’s starting to get really loud there and he says that everyone is being really orderly. One guy has a tent, he is number 4 in line. Playing games on a PSP or something.

The papers in town put the wrong stores down for who is going have iPhones. The place in town is where my brother is and there are now about 100 people in lone now he says.

This is so cool.

Apple Store Updatehe said the first 11 people are in the store now and none of them have come out yet. Since the SMSs have gone quiet I would guess he is now in the store. Will have to wait and see.

The Apple Store just went down to be updated so we all know what that means. You will be able to order a new iPhone in the next few hours right from store.Apple.com

So my brother has his iPhone (8GB) model. The store only have 40 of the 8 GB and I would guess they have 40 of the 4GB.

Day After - I have not heard from my brother yet. I would have expected a call by now but nothing. I would imagine he is using his iPhone now and is pretty content with himself about it. I am trying as hard as I can to justify one but I just can’t. I might call our accountant and ask him how I can write one off the old taxes and see what he says. Maybe I can use it for my “Photography Business”?

CNET Big Picture ToolI read CNET.com a good bit. It’s a good site for a nice 40,000 foot tech overview. So I found a tool today and it’s pretty cool to tinker with. It’s call the Big Picture and it shows you the story you are reading and visually other related stories. You have to check this out. You would have figured Google.com would have come up with something this cool, but no such luck.

Click here to see a sample story and the tool on the left hand side.

Maybe you all have seen this already and I am the slow one but this is just super cool. It’s powered by a company called LivePlasma.com, I think I read something about them years ago dealing with music and stuff.

While I know the iPhone is going to be a hit, I also will be waiting for the 2nd version of it. I would love to go out and get one on Friday, but my better judgement is that I should wait. All things come with time. I know my buddy Tyler in Atlanta will have one of those nice shinny iPhone by noon tomorrow and I have not even called him to ask him, I just know!

LINK to Post - Pete’s Wordshop

Even thought I still don’t understand it I like what Pete is talking about here.

This is an idea that is over a year old. I am always on the prowl for new, productive frameworks that could make my job easier. No magic bullet found yet but I do trip across some cool stuff. Last year I had heard about Ruby on Rails and ran through a quick demo application. Not bad. Lots of “magic” in naming, table structures and so on that can make it very easy to build a simple CRUD application if you play by the rules. I put it down, though, because I really didn’t want to learn another set of language syntax. However, the fact you could build a simple CRUD application very quickly stuck with me.

While most of you know ANGUS, I had the wonderful opportunity to talk to him on a couple of occasions at COMMON in Anaheim this year and was always interested in what ANGUS [Not ANGUS] has to say. I found this post on his site to be rather interesting as I have been told at work to lay off being so enthusiastic about the System i while in meetings. As some of you do know I can and will be an over the top at times when it comes to the i.

While I am in love with iXsystems.com I think it’s funny they used a picture of the iSeries servers to represent their servers. LOL!

Why do I like them so much?

Well, because they are a FreeBSD shop and they love their BSD. We iSeries people can identify with zealots and platform crazy types so we are really one in the same, only our commands are easier to use.

BSDNews.com is back up. I think it was down for a few days or maybe it was just the Windows fans keeping me from my favorite UNIX news.

Who is John Galt?

I love the book Atlas Shrugged and Ayn Rand. I have Ken to thank for that. Thanks Ken! Oh I still have your copy and I just read it again and should return it to you next time I see you.It is such a depressing look at the world we all live in and if you really start to dig around you will soon find it is more fact than fiction! I just hope there is a John Galt and that we have not driven him into hiding yet, but as I think about it I think we probably already have.LINK to the John Galt Radio Address and with Audio from the Audio Book.

Link to Main Story on Solaris Install

While I have been tinkering over the past few weeks with many things I have found myself installing Solaris on Intel based machines and I find this article timely as I have been struggling with the install process and the lack of flexibility in some places and the vagueness of the options. Also I have found that Solaris does not like to configure Ethernet hardware no matter how generic or supported it is.

I do hope that Solaris puts a bit of time into the installation process and the Jumpstart tools to make them easier to set up and to manage. They are both very old and tired and need a bit of work to make them easier to use. While Jumpstart is a very cool tool it takes a few hours if not days to get right and it should be a matter of minutes, no more than an hour. So while Solaris 10 is the best Sun has to offer I still think compaired to Linux, i5/OS and Windows they have a long way to go in the usability part of the OS. It’s just not as polished as it could be, and after 15 years and lord know how many developers at Sun you would think they would have done this already.

To bad more Enterprise Application that require UNIX are not MacOSX ready!
