Top Gear - Who is The Stig?

The StigI am a huge fan of Top Gear on the BBC. There is something about that show that makes you want to watch it. Kelly even likes to watch it and she normally hates car shows. There is a test driver on there they call “THE STIG” and no one knows who it is. He is always seen in a white racing outfit and the identity of The Stig is not know. We all found out who the first Stig was after he was killed off, but the new Stig is just a mystery, until now.

I am about to tell you who The Stig is so hang on.

Ben CollinsThe Stig is none other than Ben Collins, or so my best guess is that is who is it.

Of course I don’t have any idea either, but he seems like a likely choice and fits the mold. Not an F1, size is right and we have not seen Ben in a while doing much so the show must be paying pretty well. Plus it’s just fun to imagine who it might be?

I think it’s changed over time. That’s the great thing about never seeing him, they can change him. I think there were rumours it was Johnny Herbert at one point too.

Carl, I would disagree. If you watch it and I take it you do, the body of The Stig has been pretty much the same. Same build. While I know most drivers are built the same, much like jockeys are in horse racing, this one seems to have not been moved in and out. Now I do think they have added a few other people over time just to spice it up and to of course throw us all off.

We will only know after he has been removed and even then I don’t think we will know.

I would have never guessed Johnny Herbert, and I would never put anyone from F1 based on the way he drives.

It’s definately not an F1 driver. His style is different, and they have been using the real F1-drivers for F1-testing on the Top Gear track.

Also, it is not very likely that it is an active driver in any top series, due to insurance issues.

So minor league active racer, or newly retired from one of the top touring car or GT car series.

Ben Collins is not a bad guess, actually.

  4. David Says:

Thanks Lars, It all came to me in a dream where I was The Stig and then I took off my helmet and it was Ben Collins…….

Nigel Mansell who i consider to be one of if not the best driver in the world posted a time of 1:44.6 The Stig subsequently posted a lap-time of 1:44.4 in the Liana, Ben Collins who when standing beside Nigel Mansell is a no body could he really beat Nigel Mansell driving a piece of crap around a track made outer a airport runway ?
Were talking about Nigel Mansell most successful British Formula One driver of all-time in terms of race wins with 31 victories, and is fourth overall on the Formula One race winners list behind Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost, and Ayrton Senna. He was rated in the top 10 Formula One drivers of all time by Murray Walker, who was a Formula One commentator for 50 years
Ben Collins was placed second in the Marlboro Masters world class Formula Three championship event in 2000. winner of the European Stock Car Championship in 2003 ASCAR stock car racing In 2005, he competed in the British GT Championship in a Porsche 996 GT3, winning races on the way before moving up to the FIA GT Series with Ascari where he led races and scored several Pole Positions
Personally i would totally luv for the stig to be Mansell but prob unlikely.
Damon hill has won almost as much as Mick has and yet ben collins is a better driver come on ???

    Gym,
While I love your post I want to make sure you know what I am saying. This is one of those “FUN” posts. It could be anyone. Ben just seems to be a easy answer at this point.

I would caution you, While I agree Nigel Mansell is a very accomplished driver, he is not perfect and to be off by 2 tens of a second is not that bad and you also have to consider it’s the STIGs home track. You would not come into my back yard and put down a better time, then again you also have to wonder that maybe just maybe there is an unspoken rule, no one beats the STIG. While I agree Nigel is remarkable he is also nice enough to play along with what seems to be one of the greatest mysteries in BBC television.

It’s always fun to toss it around and I always enjoy talking about it.

    Thanks for the post.

Not to change the subject but did you see the Top Gear episode where the team has to drive across Botswana……at the end of the drive (in their utterly crappy cars) The stig`s African cousin appeared to test the cars and it was a black guy complete with the white helmet, a white loin cloth and the shoes.

    hilarious!!

  8. David Says:

Yes yes, the African STIG, still next to the American BIG STIG, it’s one of mu favs!

  9. JOHN Says:

    Alain Prost is the stig.
The Top Gear episode where Top Gear raced a used BMW in the Silverstone relay race refers to who the Stig is!
Clarkson refered to the mechanics as being “the Stig’s team” and that he had never seen a car is so many pieces “4hrs before a F1 race”, infering that the mechanics are/were F1 mechanics. The mechanics wore yellow vests covering thier jumpsuits. If you look carfully you can see “Alain Prost Racing” on two memers of “the Stig’s team” chest.
