Comment: So at this point we can see that Vowe.net is only slightly less important than Lotus Notes 8.5. There is of course a 90% margin for error and since I am doing the survey we need to add another 7% to that just because I can do simple math.  The 210 clicks is the most unnerving number in my book. I guess both sides want to know how the other fairs. Thanks all for coming!

I was talking the other day with some friends, and the topic came up about Christian Rock Bands….where do I start. Let me make this frank. Bands like Stryper and Perta are complete crap. They are sad excuses for bands much less christain rock bands. I can recall a time when I was forced to listen to them and I hated every moment of it, they make me more angry than the satanic music of Ozzy or Iron Madien!

Alright so you are looking now and I really don’t have much to say. I read or cruise PLANET LOTUS.org all the time trying to keep up and I can’t stop clicking on what Vowe posts (Volker Weber), I know it’s going to be very Vowe but It’s not always anything I would read int eh wild but it’s always interesting to see. Thanks Vowe or Volker Weber for making the Lotus part of the internet interesting. Now go back to his site, I know the visits are short lived.

Volker Weber’s 5 day hit count right now is over 1100 and mine is like 7 or 8, yeap 7. So I just wanted to casue a little trouble on Friday. Have a great weekend y’all.

Also I wanted to see how many links I could get on PlanetLotus.org too. Just as a Friday experiment.

Proof: The post about Lotus 8.5 and Ubuntu has 20 Hits and this one has 16 and is on the rise. Just more proof Vowe is more popular than Lotus Notes!

I have a standard updated as of today version of Ubuntu 8.04 running on a DELL Optiplex 755. It’s a pretty good little second machine. I have installed the Lotus Notes client on the Ubuntu desktop and have take a few screen shots to share with all of you.

As for the install, it’s easy and that is how you do software. There are a few things out of place in the client but all seems to be working. Still tinkering but I wanted to get these posted.

I think this is the Sametime Installer

Installing from DEBs that came right from IBM. I didn’t have to make them!

Part of the Wizard

Lotus Notes Wizard looking for the ID file

Lotus 8.5 DB properties. Sorry for the black outs. Had to for my purposes.

FIle Menu

Lotus 8.5 Open Menu

Lotus 8.5 displaying an Image and it worked first time. No problems there.

A little image of what you get when you download the TAR files from IBM. Hope that all makes sense. Looks like a football play?

Side Notes: I am excited as to the future of Lotus Notes. I really am. A Linux/Ubuntu install and the new Mac client is well and good, but when am I going to be able to trash my Windows desktop as an Administrator or a Designer? How far out is that? I know I can use the Web Administration but that creates overhead on my servers and if one of them is down it spoils the works. I really want IBM to build a Lotus Administration Client for Linux and if you are felling cheeky a MacOSX version too. I would also like to see a clear path to Eclipse and how that is coming. IMHO it should have been out years ago, but again it’s not here and we are all kind of stuck in the middle again with Notes 8.5 for Linux and for Mac but no way to build new applications or administer them. If Microsoft wants to take pot shots at you this is the way they are going to do it. Point out that Lotus is only delivering some of the tools on some of the OSes and playing favorites. It may be FUD but it’s what they have to work with.

Lotus needs to step it up and stop playing delivery man all the time and just give me what I have been requesting going on five or nine years now. I want my Administration Client and my Designer Client on Mac and Linux (Ubuntu) and I want it now. I don’t want crying about numbers or statistics, I just want it delivered and I expect it from a company as large as IBM who cries all the time about how poor Windows is and then forces it’s customer base to keep using it. You can’t have it both ways.

In the end I may end up being the smartest dude in technology. I have been calling for this move for years and while I know if I yelled and said it long enough over time it would eventually happen. With new leaked screen shots of Windows 7 out and looking more confusing than ever, and an even better release that Linux hackers are starting to move to MacOSX. Is this the shift Apple has been looking for? Is the failure of Vista and the silent, growing success of MacOSX finally put us at the tipping point.

While I would break my heart to see Linux fall short, it’s time for something other than Windows. Windows is garbage and it’s failed and disappointed us for years and I think the consumer is know waking up and seeing it for what it’s worth.

I sure do hope this is going the direction I think it is and time will only tell.

I would like all of my wonderful readers in the US to take a minute or two to think about Memorial Day. For all the brave soldiers, sailors, airmen & marines who did their job so that you and I today can be proud Americans. This blog is proof of that in  it’s the most simple example of free speech in America right now. I have my own voice and I am allowed to share it with you because of these heroes.

Thank You all who have served and still do.

As a kid I wanted to be an F1 race car driver. I saw a few F1 races as a kid and was smitten with the idea of driving fast, my parents had other ideas and concluded “I would get killed doing that”. Ah to die doing the thing you love. What a great way to go! I know, i know, I don’t want to die but you only get one life here you might as well have fun the first time, cause there isn’t a second time….

With that said. I am a TOP GEAR fan and they just posted a link to the new VW Scirocco GT24 for racing this weekend at the Nurburgring.

“Called the Scirocco GT24, it’s a fully-working concept powered by - yes, you guessed it - VW’s two-litre TFSI engine.

Bumped up to 296bhp, it sounds remarkably close to the engine in the Audi TT Clubsport, but instead of feeding all four wheels, all that power goes to the front wheels through a six-speed DSG box.”

I would like one, yes please!

So being a fan of iXSystem and still wanting them to send me a server to DEMO, wink wink, I love the site redesign. I am not sure when they did it but it’s new to me and I like it. iXSystems is doing great things with FreeBSD and PC-BSD that we all have dreamed of. While both operating systems are truly remarkable, they have taken ownership of many parts of the BSD OS and made them come to life and this is very important. FreeBSD is still one of my favorite OSes out there and I try to get people to run it all the time. I have it running here (on a really old DELL, hint hint) and it runs great. I do testing and sandbox work on it. PC-BSD just makes sense and is getting very close to being right up there with Ubuntu with less of a developer community and less staff to work with.

Check out their NEWS page to see all the super stuff they are doing with BSD.

iXSystems makes some really clean really good looking server and if you are looking for a small simple pizza box like UNIX server these guys are the pros. I have talked to them many times on the phone and they all are very passonate about the work they do. The first time I blogged about them here on this very site they found me and called me to thank me. You don’t get that from other comapnies, in fact most companies don’t give two toots about bloggers and see them as problems, which may be correct in some cases but we do have things we all like and I love iXSystems. I love them for owning the ideas behind BSD, I love them for building BSD specific servers and storage solutions. I love them because they promote PC-BSD and i love them that they took time out of their day to call me and thank me about talking about that them the first time.

They now have a BSD based Laptop and Workstation. If you don’t want to build your own just call them up and wham you too can have a little BSD making life a bit better. I would love to see how those two little items run.

So if you are thinking about a SUN solution or a Linux solution you might want to give these guys a call first. They have UNIX or BSD based solutions that they support and are passionate about and if Lotus Domino was supported (notice I did not say run, because I have it running on FreeBSD just not being supported by IBM Support) on FreeBSD I would run it on iXSystems Servers in a heart beat.

Oh and they also run the FreeBSD Mall. I sure hope a redesign and some more modern products show up there was well. I know I talked to a few of the guys and asked for some more simple designs, Just the beastie ball on a black golf shirt? That’s all I want. This is to busy, it screams I am a geek and I don’t know how to dress. be more subtle.
