Link to Main Story on Solaris Install

While I have been tinkering over the past few weeks with many things I have found myself installing Solaris on Intel based machines and I find this article timely as I have been struggling with the install process and the lack of flexibility in some places and the vagueness of the options. Also I have found that Solaris does not like to configure Ethernet hardware no matter how generic or supported it is.

I do hope that Solaris puts a bit of time into the installation process and the Jumpstart tools to make them easier to set up and to manage. They are both very old and tired and need a bit of work to make them easier to use. While Jumpstart is a very cool tool it takes a few hours if not days to get right and it should be a matter of minutes, no more than an hour. So while Solaris 10 is the best Sun has to offer I still think compaired to Linux, i5/OS and Windows they have a long way to go in the usability part of the OS. It’s just not as polished as it could be, and after 15 years and lord know how many developers at Sun you would think they would have done this already.

To bad more Enterprise Application that require UNIX are not MacOSX ready!

So the OS that Sun can’t stop talking about being the best OS on the face of the earth, ahemmm has no one heard of i5/OS at Sun?

Sun even came here to where I worked and talked at nausea about Solaris 10 and how awesome it is and for some reason Sun isn’t taking their own medicine. So Solaris 10 the most fabulous OS on earth is not good enough to run the web servers that run Sun.com. As noted in the article they just moved from 8 to 9 in November, and now are sitting on 9 while telling the world how great 10 is….even MS moved to Windows2003 Server faster then Sun moved to 10. I know for a fact that Apple was running on MacOSX before is was out the door.

Also the kicker in the story is that GeorgeBush.com is not on FreeBSD. One of the only things I could agree with him on and I am sure he has no idea he made that move.

Link to eWeek Article.

Sun Microsystems is set to license OpenSolaris under the upcoming GNU General Public License Version 3 in addition to the existing Common Development and Distribution License, sources close to the company have told eWEEK.

Oh this is just yummy and stupid at the same time. Hey lets keep Solaris out of the hands of the Open-Source community. I know I am going against everything I stand for but this is one of those times when I don’t think you need to open source the code!
