Convert from Windows to Ubuntu, IBM is doing it so we all should?

July 8th, 2008 1 Comment »

I was reading Bill Higgins blog post about converting from Windows to Ubuntu on his work desktop. While I am impressed with his little write up I would like to offer him a little something if he has not already found it.

Airline’s grow a pair - Kicks poorly behaved family off flight

July 7th, 2008 No Comments »

So I am going to give Southwest a thumbs up today for hang the smarts to kick off a family of people who with two adults with them could not control 4 kids. I am not heartless, I don’t think it sad they got stuck, and two of the kids have some kind of problem that would make them a bit to handle, but slippery slop of doing nothing has to stop and I think it’s starting to stop now. I think you can see by the video that Soutwest was justified for the removal, these people don’t seem like the organized, disciplined type.

I want one too Jezza!

June 30th, 2008 No Comments »

I am not a big fan of Mercedes Benz. I will admit it openly. I love the way the cars look but the badging is all wrong. You have no idea what they are talking about when they call half the cars C320s and the car next to is an SLK? What is that all about?

What I will tell you is that I have always been a fan of racing, and if you like racing you have to love Porsche, you have to really like BMW and Audi, and DTM is some of the coolest racing known to man. Well it beats the hell out of NASCAR any day, but what doesn’t?

So a year or so back AMG released the CLK DTM. What that means I don’t know, but I do know what t he DTM means….racing!

So this past week Top Gear reviewed the new CLK DTM AMG Black and I now know what I want if I can’t have a nice perky Porsche 930 or 911. I want me a Mercedes Benz CLK DTM Black. Yes, One please!

I like to post things like this. Seeing and hearing people talk about using Linux for the first time. Of course when I say “Some Guy” I am not being mean, I just seemed to fit my mood today.

UGA VI - Farewell

June 29th, 2008 6 Comments »

I didn’t cry this week when George Carlin died, I just wondered if he got his chance to meet God and God got to tell him he was wrong. I didn’t get upset when Bo Diddley died either, but I made me listen to his music for a few days. I felt bad when Tim Russert passed away all of a sudden and really just thought that was sad, but I didn’t get really upset. In the past few weeks we have seemed to lose someone important in America and this weekend one of the most important icons to me passed away.

Kelly read it to me out of the paper and I think we both cried a little, and I was heart broken. See here is the issue, UGA holds a special place for anyone who grew up in Georgia. I still have the collectors Coke glasses my grandfather purchased went The Bulldogs had the greatest season ever. I still think Hershal Walker is a magical person, and that name alone makes me warm inside. But when you say UGA, meaning the bulldogs that Sonny Seiler owned UGA and lived in Savannah, GA, then and only then do you get my true and undivided attention.

UGA VI you will be missed.

If they would have had an open public funeral I would have packed up Peaches and been off to Athens. I know he and all the other UGA’s before him will be happy in that special place watching those special games, being the most admired mascot in all of college football. Not only is UGA a Bulldog, an icon, be he is also like me and Peaches a Savannian!  and a great one at that!

I am a little wet around the eyes now thinking about it all, farewell to a great DAWG, I think this year UGA needs to romp and stomp like a Bulldog does and show UGA VII what college football like played the UGA way! While UGA VI may have been the winning-est UGA, I want UGA VII to help inspire Bulldog Football to be the most impacting and hard football the SEC has ever seen. I want to them have another 1981 all over again. I want to watch good Georgia Bulldog SEC football and I want the LSU Tigers to know, you don’t bring a Tiger to a DAWG fight, cause your going to get Bulldogged all afternoon. UGA VII the weight of the Bulldog nation is upon you and I stand up proud, never have been to Athens, never have seen a Georgia Game in person, knowing I am from Georgia, I am from Savannah, and I own a Bulldog and I love UGA Football! Go DAWGS!

Damon Evans, the university’s athletic director, called it a “sad day for the entire Bulldog nation.”

“As the cost of shipping continues to soar along with fuel prices, homegrown manufacturing jobs are making a comeback after decades of decline.

While it once cost $3,000 to ship a container from a city like Shanghai to New York, it now costs $8,000, prompting some businesses to look closer to home for manufacturing needs.”

It’s called MacOSX People, please start supporting it!

June 23rd, 2008 3 Comments »

Why don\'t you support Mac?I can’t tell you how much this makes me crazy, that some 8 years after MacOSX was released companies are still not able to support Apple and the new and improved OS. I am sure the learning curve is hard to grasp and has taken most software companies by storm so much so that it will take them well over 8 years to start working with it instead of fighting it.

Let’s look as one of the largest problems with supporting MacOSX. For one it’s built on BSD which is so hard to understand and then to make that even worse they give away the developer client called xCode. Microsoft makes you pay for these tools, but Apple gives them away freely with the purchase of the OS. Shame on them, this must be the point of confusion. If something is FREE, it’s worthless. Take Linux for example. We all know it’s complete crap becasue it’s FREE, and nothing says CRAP like when you have to give it away.

So much for that. I think we all know what Mac is so hard to work with. Now shame on all the companies, IBM included that don’t play nice with MacOSX. Shame on Lotus, Shame on IBM i and shame on all the places like Tango/04 who don’t think it’s a good idea to want to sell products to all of it’s customers base?

Why would you decide to only reach part of the market? Why would you limit yourself to just supporting the Windows platform? I know its been a big seller but times are a changing. IE is out and Firefox is in. I am going to say it again, it’s only a matter of time before Microsoft losses it’s foothold and you have to think about that time now.

Jim Grisanzio - Working from Home vs Working at work!

June 23rd, 2008 No Comments »

I read Jim’s blog everyday and sometimes, check your stats Jim I am sure you will see me hitting it, more than once a day maybe every hour or so, or at least I check it. So it goes without saying I like Jim, I like his content and I like to read what Jim has to say because it either reinforces my beliefs or it make me think a little about my views.

There I said it.

I also like to read Jim’s blog because he lives in Japan and I used to live in Japan and in a funny sort of way miss it and would love to live there again if the occasion was to arise, and with that said I give you the reason for the post, working from home or working from the office….

Jim lays out some good thoughts for you all wanting to work from home. I have done both and right now am doing both. I can tell you that in the office there is not much privacy, while at home I have my entire office to think, scream, talk to myself and just be me, while that is not the case in the office provided for me which is not an office in that it has a door and such, but a large room with 3.5 foot cubes with little to no way to think or be away from all the action and bustle of office life.

So read Jim’s Boog post : Working from Home (or anywhere)

“Place shouldn’t matter. Results should matter. Being tied to an office as the only place of work is outdated at best. But I also value the concept of everyone getting together in the same space at times because I believe that face-to-face contact is essential to getting quality work done over the long term. Local teams can get together weekly in the office for meetings and white board sessions, and distributed teams can get together quarterly or bi-annually. And in between team meetings, various members can be interacting at conferences or user groups. In other words, there needs to be a balance of face-to-face and digital-phone relationships. “

Thanks Jim for the insigt!
